"Galisteo Two" Source

In 2020, Galisteo Two was found near the Galisteo One panel also in the Galisteo Basin. I regard this panel as unique as it appears to carry a singular message. It is thought my some that if a person or animal has horns they hold spiritual meaning. The serpent is a part of several of today's pueblo mythologies. The Kewa regard the serpent as representing rebirth and new life. I ask myself what is it about a snake that could represents this? In nature a snake sheds it's skin.

In 2020 we were searching along the Santa Fe river. As we approached the river we startled two mallards. Following their flight, there, 40 feet above us, was the panel wedged into a crevas.

Kewa Creation Story

  •  This is the creation story of the Kewa people. From the top of the piece, the story begins with the sun, moon and stars holding a great council meeting to bring life to the barren world below. Working down, as the rain spirits began the rain, life began to grow out of the new soil as the spiral of water and life unfolded. Their fore fathers roamed as hunter-gathers. Then they learned and practiced agriculture. From that point their people could build homes and finally settle down to live in one place.

Another Creation Story

  •  I am told that there are many creation stories within the Native American world. This is just one where I have taken liberties in its telling so I can better understand as an artist, their beauty and symmetry. Beginning at the center of the spiral ...

~~~~~~~
  •  From the spiral sky world above, the sun, the moon and all the stars gathered for a great council. In their meeting they began to dream together of a place in the dark world below. A place for all life. As the rain spirits were called, a great storm rumbled across the sky above as never before. The water held magical powers. One after another, as each drop hit the hard pack earth below, the rocks turned into soil. As the sun spirit shown down on this new land, the plant spirits sent down deep roots to anchor the first small saplings as they reached towards the sun. Tender green shoots sprang up thanking the sun and rain spirits. As the plant world grew so did the animals, fish and birds as they all began their dance of life together.
  • There were times in this new world when the sun’s warmth gave life and times when the clouds left the world in cold and darkness. This was a time when all living creatures held their dreams in a long sleep … until the sun once again looked down upon them. In this dream there came a woman to nurture this new world. Her family wandered over the earth in harmony with all living things, sharing these gifts of life. One day she was out picking berries. She marveled that a bush, in this very place year after year, gave it’s fruit to her. She told her family of this marvel and they decided to plant more berry seeds. Each year when they returned a new bush grew to feed them. And so her family decided to plant many seeds of many kinds. It was in that place where they settled,  to tend their crops and build their homes to wander no more.
"Hands Over Time" Sources
On nearly all the petroglyph panels I've seen and photographed, hands appear in many shapes and sizes. Some from an open hand perspective and some from the back of the hand. Could an empty open hand say "I come in peace"  or is it a signature, "I was here". A  hand etching within the context of the entire panel will give your imagination a lot to go on.
